Kiteboarding 2015/2016 season in Boracay during the strongest El Niño in history !
It's no secret that the world has experienced very strange weather the past 6+ months, well we are in the grips of the strongest El Niño the planet has ever seen. California to the Alps is seeing crazy weather and Boracay Philippines is no exception, since our Kitesurf center opened in Bulabog beach we have never experienced a season so hot with so little rain.
What is El Niño and what has it meant for the wind in Boracay ?
El Niño is a warming of the central to eastern tropical Pacific that occurs every two to seven years, on average. The term also commonly refers to the atmospheric rearrangements that occur with the oceanic warming. During an El Niño event, sea surface temperatures across a watery expanse often as large as the United States can warm by 1–3°F or more for a period of from a few months to a year or two. So how has this affected the kitesurf season here in Boracay ?
Well this season as well as being super hot with almost zero rain we have seen super consistent winds but much lighter winds than we have become accustomed to here in our island paradise. December through to the end February we usually use 9 or 10m kites and often require a thermal rash guard or sometimes even a shorty if you are planning 2 or 3 sessions per day. The 2015/16 season has seen no shorties, rash guards or even hoodies on the chilly evenings this however has come at a price. We have had to settle for using our 12 or 14m kites almost everyday bar 1 or 2 days during the season. Remember it's tough living the dream but someone has got to do it ;)
We have also got to let you into our secret prediction its approaching the end of March now and these lighter super consistent winds are showing no sign of letting up. We have all seen the massive snow dumps in both the Rockies and the Alps with resorts extending their seasons, time will tell but here at Ocean Republic we have a feeling that the #EndlessSummer is going to turn into the Endless kite season here in Boracay. Remember you heard it here first from Asia's first IKO school, and for those lighter winds also remember our school is fully equipped with the weapons of choice for light wind fun. Come down to demo, rent or buy the Slingshot Turbine also give our 14m rally a try with our rental skim boards.
Remember after El Niño comes La Niña so dust off your SMALL KITES !!!
Yes that's right El Niño is always followed by La Niña so if you wish to pre order small kites wetsuit for yourself or your school please contact Glen(at)ocean-republic.com to avail our pre order discounts as in Habagat and then Amhian season. We are expecting much cooler weather with our usual stronger winds
Good Wind to everyone and Aloha from paradise.
